The Department of Public Works is under the control of the Board of Public Works and Safety and under the daily supervision of the Director of Public Works, who is appointed by the Mayor. The Department consists of the Motor-Vehicle-Highway (M.V.H.) Department, the
Garbage-Sanitation-Garage (G.S.G.) Department, the Recycle Department, the Local Road & Street (LRS) Department, and the Seymour Municipal Sanitation Utility ( S.M.S.U.) Department
The M.V.H. Department is responsible for the improvement and maintenance of streets, alleys, street right-of-ways, maintenance of storm drainage ditches, and other City owned properties. This includes concrete and asphalt construction and repair, street signs and street markings, downtown banners and flags, Christmas decorations, wheel chair curb ramps, tree grates and
sidewalk pavers, snow and leaf removal, street sweeping, mowing, downtown maintenance and cleaning, limb removal, herbicide applications, and Police call duty . This Department works with all City crews during Make Seymour Shine, Annual 4th of July Celebration, Chamber of Commerce Ride to Recycle Bike Ride, Seymour Oktoberfest, Recycle Awareness Day, Flag Day, V-J Day Parade, Oktoberfest Parade, Halloween Parade, and any emergency situations. The funds of the M.V.H. Department are provided by the State Vehicle Fuel Tax with some supplement from local tax funds. Other sources of funding include: Thoroughfare Fund (local tax), the Local Road and Street
Fund (State Fund), and the Capital Improvement Fund (State Cigarette Tax).
The G.S.G. Department is responsible for the daily collection of trash and garbage and yard waste from 6,000 residences within the City limits of
Seymour. Three residential routes, one yard waste route, and one route serving churches and not-for-profit organizations are run daily to provide timely collection of our community’s waste and yard waste. We haul approximately 9,200 tons or 18,400,000. pounds of garbage and 2,408 tons or 4,816,000. pounds of yard waste every
year. The G.S.G. Department also provides snow removal, limb removal, extra trash pickups for large items and construction debris, provides other emergency assistance to our community and provides the maintenance and repair for all Department of Public Works vehicles and equipment. G.S.G. provides the majority of the work for Make Seymour Shine, assists in setup, cleaning, and breakdown for the Seymour Oktoberfest and assists in the City’s recycling programs and parades. Funding for this Department comes from local tax dollars and landfill fees assessed each user.
The Recycle Department is responsible for the free daily curbside recycling program made available to the 6000 households in Seymour, the downtown small business recycling route, the cardboard/ office paper route for small businesses and schools, the 24 hour drop-off sites for recyclables at 1100 E. 4th Street, the paint and household hazardous waste drop-off and handling, and the sorting, baling and loading of recyclable commodities for sale to vendors. This department also presents recycling programs to groups ranging in age from pre-school to senior citizens, offers tours of our recycling center, sets up displays at seminars and community events and encourages recycling at major City functions. Items that can be recycled are: plastic 1&2 bottles, aluminum & tin cans, glass jars and bottles that contained a food product, newspaper, magazines, books, office paper, cardboard, paperboard, used motor oil, anti-freeze, oil-based paint, automotive & household batteries, and scrap metal. Funding for this department comes from local tax dollars and dollars generated from the sale of commodities.
The L.R.S. Department is responsible for concrete and asphalt repair to local streets, curbs and sidewalks. This crew repairs small problem areas in existing pavements.
